My plan for Halifax
Now that the election is over we have an opportunity to turn the page on 14 years of Conservative chaos and broken promises. Britain needs change, and as your Labour MP I will prioritise the policies that matter to you. That is why I want you to get in touch, and let me know what you want to see as part of a plan for a better Halifax.
Tackle the cost of living crisis and bring down household bills.
- We will tackle the cost of living crisis head on, by growing our economy, creating good jobs and delivering economic stability.
- The Tories caused economic chaos and it’s ordinary working people who have paid the price. Labour will have tough spending rules and won’t increase your Income Tax, National Insurance or VAT.
- Make work pay by introducing a real living wage and improving workers’ rights through Labour’s New Deal for Working People.

Cut NHS waiting times and improve access to GP appointments
- There are currently over 35,000 people waiting for NHS care in Calderdale and Huddersfield and too many people are facing the 8am rush for GP appointments.
- The Labour Government will cut NHS waiting times across the country, delivering 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments per week – that’s 2 million extra appointments a year.
Take back control of local bus services and fix our railways
- I will work with the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, to bring Halifax’s buses back into public control, increasing the number and frequency of routes, and connecting parts of West Yorkshire that had been cut off by private operators.
- The Labour Government will also bring all passenger rail into national ownership under Great British Rail, putting passengers at the heart of the service and ensuring the new system is more reliable, affordable, high-quality, and efficient.
Tackle antisocial behaviour with a return to neighbourhood policing
- The number of PCSOs in West Yorkshire has been cut by almost 30% since the Conservatives entered Government in 2010. We see the effect of this on our streets.
- Labour’s Neighbourhood Policing Programme will get a grip of antisocial behaviour by putting 13,000 more police officers and PCSOs back on our streets.
- Increase fines and give police greater powers to scrap antisocial and illegal quadbikes and mopeds.

Protect our environment and invest in green energy
- Labour will implement our Green Prosperity Plan – a growth plan to achieve clean power by 2030. We will establish Great British Energy, a new publicly owned energy company that will drive investment in clean, renewable energy.
- Our plan will cut household energy bills by £300 on average, create 650,000 good jobs across the country and deliver real energy security.
- Oppose the Sowerby Bridge incinerator plan and protect Halifax’s air quality.
- Work to protect our town against flooding and landslides.
Giving our children the best possible start in life
- Schools are in the midst of a teacher recruitment crisis, including in vital subjects like Maths. One of Labour’s first steps in government is to recruit 6,500 new teachers.
- Childcare costs have soared under the Conservatives. That’s why we will create 3,000 new primary school-based nurseries and provide free breakfast clubs in every primary school, ensuring our kids get the best start in life.
- We need all school leavers to have great career options close to home. Labour will provide high-quality apprenticeships and specialist technical colleges.
- Too often our education systems do not meet the needs of all children, particularly those with SEND. We will make sure admissions decisions account for the needs of communities and require all schools to cooperate with their local authority on school admissions, SEND inclusion, and place planning.
